The Basics of Using Online Forums

Shannon Kietzman, Contributing Writer

Are you planning to pursue your education at an online university? If so, you may be a bit frightened by the technology you will have to tackle when pursuing a college degree online. This is particularly true if you are not comfortable with computers and other forms of technology. Fortunately, once you get accustomed to the use of technology, you will likely find that pursuing an online education offers a great number of benefits. Not only will it offer you more flexibility in scheduling, it also provides you with the opportunity to learn from students from around the world. One reason this type of sharing is possible is through the help of online forums.

What are Online Forums?

Many online schools set up forums for their students. On these forums, you can exchange ideas and thoughts with other students as well as with the classroom facilitator. Generally, you will simply type in the things that you want to share with other students and a thread will be created that shows the entire conversation that takes place.

A thread is simply a listing of the comments that were left by various students. Since all of the students taking the class have access to the forum, everyone can participate in the conversation and you can take full advantage of the knowledge that your peers have to share.

What are the Benefits to Online Forums?

Online forums can be very beneficial when attending an online university. Most importantly, it provides everyone with an opportunity to share his or her ideas. Therefore, even those students that may be too shy to participate in traditional classroom discussions can share their thoughts. In this way, you can benefit as well. After all, even the shyest of students will have some great ideas to share. Furthermore, if you happen to by the shy student, participating in an online forum gives you a certain amount of anonymity that may make it easier for you to share your thoughts as well.

Another benefit to online forums is that they can be added to at any time. Therefore, you can add your thoughts to the discussion at a time that fits your schedule. In addition, unlike a traditional classroom discussion, a discussion on a forum can take place over a matter of several days as you and your peers continue to explore the topic further if you like. Finally, since you are typing these discussions into the forum, they remain a permanent fixture for you to refer to later if needed.

How Can I Get the Most from Online Forums?

In order to reap the rewards of online forums, you have to actually participate in the discussion. Many online schools actually require participation in these forums in order to pass the class. In fact, your teacher may require you to post a certain number of comments per week. This is a good thing; however, as it helps get you more involved in the classroom discussion.

Participating in an online forum is actually quite simple. Generally, the classroom facilitator will set up the thread, which will have a title that describes the topic of the thread. All you have to do is simply click on that title and you will be able to add your own comments after reading the comments of others. It really is that simple! So, don't let it scare you off – jump in and get talking with your classmates. You will be glad you did.
