Determining if You're Ready to Go Back to School

Shannon Kietzman, Contributing Writer

Most experts agree…earning a bachelor's degree is starting to become expected in today's workforce. In fact, having some sort of college degree is such a normal expectation that many refer to college degrees as the new high school diploma. Even our President has urged every American to head back to college in order to pursue a higher education so our economy and our country can grow stronger. Yet, with all of this talk about going back to school, you might still feel unsure about whether or not you are ready to take on the challenge of going to college. If so, here are a few things you should consider you can determine if now is the right time for you.

How is Your Current Financial Situation?

If you are currently struggling to make ends meet, you may feel like now is a bad time to go to college. In reality, there may never be a better time than now! If finances are tight, you could potentially qualify for a significant amount of financial aid. In addition, with the job market being in its current state of disarray, you aren't very likely to find an available position that will help your finances. So, use this time to go back to college and prepare yourself for a brighter future. On the other hand, if your financial situation is stable and you can afford to cut back on your hours, now is a great time to focus on your studies without having to worry about your financial situation.

How is Your Career Going?

If you have reached a stalemate in your career, it is certainly time to think about heading back to college. Whether you have reached a point where you cannot move up the corporate ladder without furthering your education, you have been laid off or you simply are no longer finding your current job to be fulfilling, it is time to consider heading back to school and shaking things up a little.

How Much Support Do You Have at Home?

If your home life is hectic and you are trying to take care of a number of responsibilities on your own, going back to college may not seem like a good idea at the time. On the other hand, you shouldn't let other responsibilities serve as an excuse for not going back to school. By attending school on a part-time basis or by taking online classes, for example, you may be able to take care of your personal responsibilities while going to school. If you can put together a network of friends and family members who can provide you with support while you go to school, however, you will find the experience to be far more pleasurable.

In short, if you are ready to make a career change, you are ready to go back to college. Although you may need to look into obtaining some financial assistance and you may need to attend on a part-time basis if you do not have an adequate support system in place, you can earn that college degree and take the first step toward obtaining the job of your dreams.
