Hybrid Instruction Deemed the Future of Education

Tom Hanson, Contributing Writer

A new form of education is taking the country by storm. Mixing traditional classroom instruction with online learning, hybrid programs have become the latest buzz in education.

Proponents of the programming deem it the best of all educational worlds. Offering face-to-face meetings with instructors when appropriate, hybrid programs also feature the convenience of online learning whenever it makes sense to provide that option.

The Hybrid Concept

The hybrid concept begins with an educational institution’s careful planning of how to blend traditional coursework with the advantages provided by online learning. In an ideal world, hybrid programs represent the best of both program styles.

Online learning allows students to complete the majority of their coursework, if not all of it, over an internet connection. This convenience means that students can do their coursework at a time that works for them and earn an education without ever having to leave their own home.

With hybrid instruction programs, the online component still represents a significant segment of the program. However, students are also able to make key contacts with their instructors and other students when it makes sense to bring these people together.

Though students still complete the majority of their work over the internet, the hybrid option allows them to make a meaningful connection with other people. Students in such programs note that the face-to-face contact serves as a great motivational tool while providing enriched learning discussions for those who take part.

Program Advantages

Since hybridization features a significant online option, students will improve both their writing and computer skills. In addition, online learning generally requires greater self-direction and time management skills than traditional learning. Developing all of these skills serves online students very well in their careers.

At the same time, having contact with other people, particularly those with an interest or expertise in a specific field, generally helps motivate students. Because online learning can be devoid of such interaction, the lack of a personal touch often makes it difficult for students to sustain their enthusiasm for learning when enrolled in only the online option.

Current research indicates that students in hybrid programs are more likely to participate in the classroom discussions. By first making face-to-face contact with other students pursuing their degree, students in hybrid programs become more inclined to collaborate online with fellow classmates during the academic year.

Hybrid vs. Entirely Online

For those students who simply cannot make classroom time commitments or cannot travel to a college campus, the online option is still the program of choice. The convenience of an entirely online program still makes that type of program the primary option for many students.

But if you are looking for an enhanced educational experience and find interaction a plus for your learning style, then the new hybrid program option may be just the ticket.
