Technology in the Classroom- Face Your Fears

Shannon Kietzman, Contributing Writer

So, you have been thinking about going back to school in order to further your education, but the thought of having to use a computer is frightening. After all, our society has become quite dependent upon technology. Therefore, whether you're going back to college at a brick and mortar campus or you decide to explore your online university options, you will certainly have to face your fears of working with computers. Never fear! If you are feeling a bit intimidated by the thought of using technology in the classroom, you will find that it isn't quite as scary as you thought.

There's Safety in Numbers

One of the first things you need to keep in mind is that you are not the only adult that is deciding to head back to college. Additionally, you aren't the only university student that feels frightened by technology. In fact, there are thousands of adults choosing to go back to school that have no idea how to use a computer. For this reason, many colleges and universities offer special courses to help their students get up-to-date on computer technology. In many cases, these courses can even count toward the elective credits you need to earn your college degree. Therefore, you can get your feet wet by taking one class in computer technology so you will be properly prepared to use the technology in your other classes.

Reaching Out to the Younger Generation

If you are unable to take a computer technology course to help get you updated on technology, you might want to consider looking toward the younger generation to help you. Let's face it, many of today's teenagers as well as those in their twenties and even in their thirties are quite knowledgeable about computers. After all, many of them have been using computers since they were children. Therefore, talk to your son, daughter, niece, nephew, or grandchild and ask for some help getting familiar with the latest technology. You might feel a bit overwhelmed and confused at first, but you will soon get more comfortable with all your computer has to offer.

Talking to a Specialist

Of course, you may not even own a computer yet - and the thought of making that purchase can also be quite intimidating. If you plan to go back to college, however, it is really best for you to get a computer for your home. Sure, if you attend a brick and mortar school, it will likely have a computer lab that you can use. But, when you depend upon a lab, you will have to work around the lab schedule and you will have to travel to campus every time you need to use the computer. In addition, if you are attending an online university, you will need to have your own computer so you can download any necessary software.

When selecting the right computer for you, take some time to talk to a variety of specialists and several different stores. The more people you talk to, the more you will learn about computers and will understand what you will need for your college classes.

Going back to school can be a scary experience, but your lack of computer knowledge doesn't have to prevent you from pursuing a higher education. Take advantage of the resources that are all around you and you will soon be a technology whiz!
